THE MADWOMAN OF CHAILLOT

Costume Design

2017

The Pheonix Theatre

Victoria, BC

The Madwoman, Countess Aurelia, leads Parisian vagabonds in the extermination of evil businessmen who plan to destroy the city for oil.

Politically, this production is about environmentalism. Visually, the costume design focuses on Chagall-like dream colours vs. black and white.

MAROWITZ' HAMLET

Costume Design

2012

The Pheonix Theatre

Victoria, BC

Directors: Charles Marowitz and Fran Gebhard

Charles Marowitz cuts and pastes excerpts from Shakespeare's classic and creates a surreal piece of theatre.

In response, the costume design is a collage of various fashion eras in history. Each character is assigned a specific era, colour, and pattern.

ANTIGONES

Costume Design and Construction

2017

MFA Project

Victoria, BC

Director: Luciana Silvestre Fernandes

A emotional movement piece adapted from the classic myth of Antigone.

The Antigones wear war-torn, dirt-stained clothing, symbolising both the protagonist’s outer battle with the system, and inner battle between her own conscience and fear.

THREEPENNY CHINESE OPERA

Costume Design

2010

BFA Project

The strong beats and clankiness of the songs of Threepenny Opera remind me of traditional Chinese opera. Therefore, I researched the different face makeup of Chinese opera characters, and discovered that every colour and face represents a different characteristic or personality. This begins the design process, assigning different colours and faces to each of the characters in the musical.

THE AMERICAN DREAM

Costume and Set Design

2017

MFA Project

Director: Luciana Silvestre Fernandes

Absurdist designs for an absurdist play. The set is meant to be disorientating, with set pieces resembling human body parts and characters dehumanised by their exaggerated costumes.

THE TEMPEST

Costume and Set Design

2017

MFA Project

Director: Luciana Silvestre Fernandes

Set on a fictional island in South America, this rendition of Shakespeare's The Tempest explores the intrusion of European Catholicism into South American religion and culture. The game of chess is subtly integrated into the set and costumes, symbolising conflict between the two lands.
