MAMA'S JEWELS
Story and Art by
Michelle Ning Lo
In a frigid world where the Sun never shines, where the days are marked by the morning horn and evening bell, life is simple. As long as the commoners praise the monarch and obey the patrols, they can live undisturbed. Twelve-year-old Rea takes this simplicity for granted. Every day after school, she creates intricate glass jewels with her mama, the royal jeweller, and marvels at the ancient legends these jewels portray.

Until her mama becomes a military target and vanishes.

Rea’s life is only spared when a charming yet enigmatic lieutenant takes interest in her mama’s jewels. Determined to find her mama, Rea recreates the jewels for the soldier in exchange for intel on her mama’s whereabouts. But information comes at a price beyond materialistic value. Rea soon uncovers secrets about her own origins—secrets that threaten to erase her from the world she knows.
